This is a pretty amazing gem to find in Mason City, IA. Menu changes often and everything we have had has been excellent. If you are a Stella fan, you will love Quarry b/c they have it on tap! Make sure you save room for one of their homemade desserts.

Perfect way to spend a nice afternoon for lunch with friends. The food was excellent-not your typical fare, from the deep fried pickles to the swordfish quesadillas. With the Park Inn Hotel around the corner, it is a great combination.

For Iowa this is pretty darn good restaurant. We really enjoyed the artichoke dip.

I come to mason city every year for a convention in the summer and every time I come I make visiting The Quarry a priority. Their drinks and beer selections are excellent, they have an array of apps and tapas, but my personal favorite is the duck. I can't even describe to you how good this duck dish is. You must try it for yourself! Do yourself and your taste buds a favor and visit The Quarry, one of mason city's hidden gems

Amazing Some of the best food in Mason City, service is normally great but can be a little spotty.

Great food, friendly service. Quite a surprise in this little town. The tapas are killer!!

Everyone seems to love this place and its food. Maybe I just went on a bad day because our food seemed very bland. We ordered avocado fries, salad (can't remember which one) lamb and a chicken sandwich. It's been awhile so I don't remember the exact menu items but we were not impressed. Our waitress gave wonderful service though. I'd still be willing to go again and try new menu items.

I was disappointed. The avocado fries were interesting and one of our party really like the vegetarian spaghetti but beyond that I would say it was very average and in fact below average for the money. The Chicken Parmesan was overcooked and looked burnt so it was sent back...described as "awful" by the person who tried it. I ordered fish tacos but got shrimp; again they were ok, but nothing special. There was gritty dirt in my daughter-in-laws salad. The service was also average - very slow - took us over an hour to get our food; probably more than two 1/2 total which if you aren't into leisurely conversation and drinking lots of beer; it was too long! Would not try again - probably go back to old standby Prime and Wine.

Good food and atmosphere. With my celiacs I wish they had a little more to choose from. Price is a little moderate but service and quality are top notch for North Iowa.

The worst service I've ever had, the owner Rachel was the rudest person I've ever met at a restaurant, and she was intoxicated. I will never eat there again nor would I ever recommend it to anyone!!

Every so often, you come across one of those places were your expectations are slightly above average, but they get blown out of the water by what you find. On multiple fronts, the Quarry restaurant did that for me last night. It's been a long while since I ate somewhere where everything was so memorable. The story began when I met a buddy at this spot. Nestled downtown by a hotel and a bit off the beaten path, it sets a nice ambiance to begin. There's a dining side and a bar side, both of which serve the same menu. Set ups are nice either place. The bar side is surprisingly quiet with a couple TVs and a nice array of seating options. The restaurant side is very quaint and almost rustic feeling - the building is a little older and it adds a certain charm. The beer menu isn't extensive, but has 10 or so different and solid brews from around the country. The wine list is a bit better and there's certainly no lack of things to try! The food is where I was blown away and unexpectedly so. A friend who's opinion I highly value told me this was one of his new favorite places. Three of us ended up sharing 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and a salad. It was one of the best meals I've had in a few years. For appetizer, we had mushrooms over rice, avocado fries and the macadamia nut fried goat cheese. The goat chees was unique and came with a fig and orange compote - Incredible flavors. The avocado fries were solid as well - lightly breaded to give the avocado just a bit of girth. Finally, the mushrooms. These were in the top 10 appetizers I've ever had. Light sautee', bruschetta, served over rice to keep the flavor locked on the plate. I found myself chewing longer as the flavor was so good. For the salad, we had the Ceasar, which I don't normally get excited about. This one however had "grilled lettuce". Sounds weird, it was BOSS! The light char gave a little smoky flavor up front and changed the flavor of the salad enough to make it really memorable! The Jambalaya was excellent with just enough kick. Rumor has it that the chef has spent time in NOLA and this dish would confirm such a rumor. The dish of the night and perhaps of the year was the Ossa Bucco - This red wine braised pork shank served with sweet potato strings and gravy was far and away one of the best things I have ever had to eat - and this hoss eats a lot! The pork was falling off the bone like it was it's business and the gravy just made me want to sing. A friend described it as "laughably good" and that's exactly what it was. I seriously can't overstate how delicious this dish was. Ms. Gaga had her meat dress, I would don a dress made of this, only to have it fall off gracefully such that I could enjoy a dress sized portion. Straight up, if you only have one meal in Iowa, come here and get the Ossa Bucco - you've love it! This is one of my new favorite places to eat in the country. A must try for anyone in town, anyone in the state and anyone in adjacent states!

Very nice place in town. Friendly service (a little slow) and clean. I had the grilled chicken sandwich which was very good. Don't drink the water, it tastes a little funny (maybe chlorinated?)

Three words. ..pork, pork, pork! The pork tacos, perfect two bites. The Osso Buco was fall of the bone delicious. The au jus served on the side was perfection. The next day, they turned the pork into a pork quesadilla with tons of melty cheese.

We dined at the restaurant side (vs the tapas bar) on a Fri night. Nice variety of quality American fare on the menu, friendly service, upscale atmosphere. We shared the avocado fries - tasty and a large portion - enough for 3. I enjoyed the fig and pear salad - but it could have used more figs on my plate (I think I had 1). Then the rib eye with garlic mashed and asparagus. Food was cooked nicely, was tasty and presented well. It is pricey and for me a special occasion stop. I recommend.

Great food. Service is ok, depending on the day. We sat outside once with a decent waitress and inside once for lunch with poor service. The menu is pricey, but the food reflects the price. Can go casual with outside or bar seating or nice on the dinner side. Nice place to go to once in awhile.

I would have to say it has the best food in the Mason City and Clear Lake area. Good presentation, good menu, and about the only place you can get any seafood. Also you gotta upgrade to the Caesar salad with your entrée, really unique with the whole head and the grill marks, very good and different style! Patio seating when the weather is nice and also they have some local brews on tap.

Great food and a good beer selection friendly and fast service. Easily one of the best restaurants in Mason City.

Great place! Drinks are wonderful and strong and the food is delicious...but I have to say, it is a tad bit pricey. The edamame is fantastic and the steak Benedict is to die for!! I usually get it medium rare with their mashed potatoes and asparagus however, a good thing to remember with all of the entrees and pastas is that their portions are HUGE so whatever you order could definitely serve as your lunch or dinner the following day as well. Not only does the Quarry have great food, but their staff is wonderful!

  • Megan C.

Love the food- especially the salmon.... but every time I'm here we have terrible service! The last 2 times we had to wait about 60-90 minutes for our food.... and the place wasn't even busy.

Best place in town. We frequent The Quarry A LOT.

I've been sitting here for an hour and a half... We just got our salads. Still waiting on the entree.

I travel a lot for work, and try a lot of different restaurants. I can honestly say that the Quarry is one of my top 10 restaurants I've ever eaten at. Their menu is diverse enough I struggle to choose the perfect meal. They have a decent selection of beer (always seems to be getting better) and a great wine list. I love the fact they have kitchen tables as well. I've been known to dine at the Quarry 5 times in a week because it's truly that great! This is the best place you'll eat in Mason City, trust me!

This is a wonderful place located in downtown Mason City next to what has to be one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed at (Historic Park Inn). I travel for business from NJ and my first stop to The Quarry was on one of the coldest nights of, well, my life in Mason City...back in February of this year. It's now May and I (we) have been making it a point to stop at least once every week we are out there. What started off as a one stop a week has become at least two dinners in one week where on occasion lunch was also ordered from there prior to that nights dinner :). The establishment is comfortable, casual, and staffed with some of the nicest people. You feel welcomed the second you walk in the door. You can order from a great selection of beers or wine and enjoy them as you take a "deep dive" into the menu. Okay, the menu...some people find it funny when I say "We'll take one of each on page one and two (appetizers)"...the thing is, I've done it and it wouldn't be a let down if you did it too. For the apps the avocado fries, crab tower, macadamia nut goat cheese, mushrooms, calamari...you name it, are all delicious. If you order the edimame, don't be surprised if you think it's a large portion but still can't find a way to stop from eating every last one even though the spice creeps up on you. It really is all that good....oh, and the scallops. On to the main dishes....Osso Bucco. i've seen this delight hit our table at least, at minimum, 6 times. The recommendations each time we bring someone new never lets down. "The Benedict" was my first meal there and the whole filet with a poached egg is right up my alley. The duck was tender and delicious, the fish/shrimp tacos were fun, and although i haven't tried it, the vegetarian accommodation of the jambalaya with Penne substitute looks incredible and I heard it was (if you're Vegetarian, they will definitely build you a nice dish) I've seen the filet on a number of plates, the Asian shrimp, and how could I forget the lamb chops. We laughed well as my buddy went into a food coma after that plate. I kid you not when I say we eat well, and literally close out the place every time. If you just want a salad, I recommend the pear and fig as a meal, or the roasted beets. I've personally had this with shrimp and salmon added. You can also choose one of these "specialty" salad as your meal salad. For soup, my other co-worker vouches for the Seafood Bisque. I can honestly say this place NEVER lets down. You will not be disappointed. I know I am forgetting names as we had repeat staff helping us out, but Andrea was one of our frequent staff members and she always made it a pleasant experience.

We stopped at The Quarry for dinner as we were driving north to the Twin Cities. It was a beautiful evening and we ate outside. The menu was interesting, and the food was delicious. I had Pear & Fig Salad and Mussels served in bruschetta cream. My husband had lamb chops, which were nicely seasoned with a jalapeño relish. We did not have room for dessert. They have a nice selection of wines by the glass. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive; although the dinner took longer than we would have liked. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

This is a fantastic restaurant! The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is classy, and the food is EXCELLENT. Yes, the price is a little steep, but the whole experience is top of the line. The Caesar salad is the best I've ever had - a whole romaine heart grilled and served warm with shaved parmesan, melt in your mouth croutons, authentic Caesar dressing and hard boiled eggs. Just fabulous. My entree was grilled shrimp and sweet potato wonton ravioli - a very creative and delicious combination of flavors. A must try!

Excellent find - miles better than the Northwestern Steakhouse. Crab Tower appetizer and excellent entrees all around. The Greek steaks were fabulous. The rhubarb pie is not to be missed. A fabulous find in Mason City and just around the corner from the fabulous Park Inn hotel.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner here on April 6, 2012. My wife ordered the filet and I ordered the large scallops. the presentation was unique, as each scallop was atop a little pile of pasta in each corner of the plate. The filet was prepared well and quite flavorful. Our wait staff was super friendly and provided helpful tips for our trip the next day to Clear Lake. BTW: the Surf Ballroom is not open on Saturdays until Memorial Day.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! We went to this restaurant for dinner and had a wonderful time. The food is perfectly prepared. We had an appetizer, two entries, and the soup of the day and all were to die for. The service was very good and the ambience of the restaurant is great. Great for couples wanting a romantic night but also family friendly! Highly recommended!

I'm a HUGE fan of the Quarry and it's owners, Jon Holt and Rachel Elsbury. The food is outstanding, the atmosphere perfect and the hosts couldn't be better. I would highly recommend asking for the kitchen tables as the banter between Jon and his assistants is priceless. I took a date there recently and they allowed us to lounge around, take our time and enjoy the evening without feeling pressured to hurry in and out like some places do. I am a big fan of the glazed duck, as well as the artichoke and feta dip...outstanding! If you are in or around the Mason City area I would highly recommend it!

Friendly staff. Came here with my great great aunt (who is 94) just after their lunch hours ended. They seated and served us anyway! All around great place to grab a bite. You have to try the avocado fries!

I was passing through town for work and had my doubts about finding good vegetarian food as small Mid-Western towns tend to fall short. The Quarry was a pleasant surprise. They had a batch of hot pepper vodka brewing at the bar which made for great bloody marys. The appetizer menue is nice with a few surprises like the avacado fries which were good. Being a vegetarian there wasn't a lot to choose from, but the vegetarian spaghetti was great. Everyone I was with seemed to really enjoy the food. The staff was friendly as well. Definitely worth stopping in, for drinks and/ or dinner.

This is a really good restaurant. Order the scallops entree and have it with the walnut/blue cheese salad. Nice ambiance inside and great service too.

I had the 8 oz fillet and roasted sweet potatoes. My steak was done to my order with wonderful flavor. My partner had the jambalaya which was also good but just a little too much cayenne. would highly recommend, but call for directions if you are from out of the area

Sally from the Decker Bed and Breakfast recommended Quarry with enthusiasm, and I heartily agree. It's laid back elegance served warmly and with scrumptious creative pride. Close your eyes after a bite or three and you are enjoying sophisticated five-star metropolis food with a quintessential Iowa shrug- an enjoyable experience for sure! We sat outside on the first clear night of the summer- I enjoyed a crisp martini with my love, we listened to soothing sounds of seventies funk and Fleetwood Mac and watched the night go by- friendly families walking the dog, tourists window shopping and locals celebrating! After 10, there are half-off appetizers for a late night happy hour- which you should take full advantage of... we indulgently sampled the offerings nearly in entirety: The Chicken Wings are rightly recommended, they are a perfect balance of flavor and spicy seasoning- this is not Midwest bland by any means! The greens, pear and goat cheese salad exceptionally set off the crispy, salty sweetness of the tapas that filled the table: Boyfriend savored the crispy, salty, sweet fried pickles and OMG Avocado Fries (made by slicing, rolling in panko and seasonings then deep-fried to crust outside but soft, buttery, warm and gooey inside) dip into the creamy sauce of my new favorite: the Crab Tower (Phenomenally craveable- Are you kidding? Crab, Avocado, Mango and Citrus in a cool creamy dressing served with fresh, crisp, hot wonton chips light as ricepaper!) flavorfully delectable and cannot be missed. I wish I had taken a picture of the options or the menu but by then the Martinis took over and we were enjoying ourselves.

I pass through Mason City every six weeks for work and always make it a point to eat at The Quarry. The owner is a wonderful host and always remembers me with a smile. She also brings a nice artichoke dip or black bean hummus by the table for me to sample. I would recommend the warm caesar salad with salmon.
